June 2008

We just have to remember that it isn’t a bad thing. I know we’re so used to placing ourselves and everything around us in boxes because it keeps our lives in order and gives it some sense. When we do something or think something that we feel is out of character, we run back into those boxes for fear of being “found out”. More often than not, we simplify people into stereotypes, when in reality, every single one of us is a complex being and it will take a whole lifetime to get to know each and every one of us (i mean a lifetime each!). And to make things more confusing and complicated – we change! :)

And right when we think it’s too much to handle… life rewards us with bright sunny days laughing with our best friends, our greatest love, a delicious meal for less than a hundred bucks, a good hair day, the priceless feeling of (really) understanding what you read in your accounting book…

… Then everything is suddenly worth it.

… and i had to learn it the HARD way.

** PREROG - the oh-so-tiring process of lining up for (God knows how many) hours, begging the department / professor to give you a slot in your desired class. and when i say “lining up for hours”, i don’t mean 1 or 2 or 3 hours; it can take you as long as 6 hours to a WHOLE day if the class you need has a high demand.

June 3 (monday) – My ever-so-reliable friends (Candice, Borbe, Reg) and i decided to go to UP at 7:30am so we can get our Form5a and start prerog-ing as early as possible. we thought that if we prerog-ed ahead of everyone else, we wouldn’t have to line up, and there’ll be more chances of getting into the classes we preferred / needed. So i woke up at 6am, woke Reg up at 6:30, picked her up at 7:15, and reached UP at 7:30. Reg had a shiftees’ orientation at 8, so candice, borbe and i lined up at the RVC (registration volunteer council) booth to get our form5a. while waiting, we bumped into a couple of our batchmates, who, like us, were also such eager beavers to start prerog-ing (hi michelle and eana! haha). unfortunately, it was announced that our form5a WOULDN’T be released that day due to some guidelines, rules and procedures our college had to follow. i felt so so so sad and bad coz our friends from the others colleges in UP got their form5a already, and they were starting to prerog that day. but ohwell, it’s okay. no use crying over spilled milk. haha :) i love BA. and i still think it’s the best and coolest college in UP. :) anyway, we tried to prerog even without our form5a but didn’t succeed, so we ended up eating lunch in Teriyaki Boy.

Attempt #1: failed. monday was not our lucky day.

June 4 (tuesday) – i woke up at 5:30 am, woke Reg up at 6, and we all (including candice, borbe and roy) met up in UP at 7. the line for the form5a was sooooo long but luckily, we were able to get ours pretty early. after getting our form5a, we lined up for the REALtime enlistment, but when we felt it was taking forever for it to start, we decided to leave BA and start prerog-ing.

Let the PREROGS begin!

  • Reg went to Econ to prerog for an Econ 100.1 class
  • I went to College of Science (CS) to start lining up for STS (Ayna texted us that the line was long).
  • Candice and Borbe picked Reg up in Econ and went to CS to meet me.
  • The line was insanely long (as in there were approximately 60 people ahead of us) so i headed for the English Department in FC (faculty center) with Candice’s and Borbe’s form5a to prerog for an English subject, while Candice and Borbe stayed in CS and Reg looked for a SocSci subject .
  • To cut the long story short, I was in the English Department in FC, Reg was in PHAN for SocSci, Candice was in CS for STS, Katie was in Archi for L Arch 1 and Borbe was our runner.
  • We got English, Reg got SocSci, and we all met up in CS to continue lining up for STS.
  • Their lunch break was at 11:30 and since we were already 2nd in line, we didn’t want to leave anymore, so we decided to wait in line until 1pm. who cares about the heat, the boredom and the hunger when you can get an STS class??? :)
  • We were entertained a couple of minutes after 1pm, but sadly, STS was already full. we tried to convince them to accommodate us in that class, but the RVC girl was sooooo nasty and rude to us so we decided to leave CS – sad, hungry, bored, sweaty, and about to cry.
  • We went around UP to look for other subjects like Arkiyoloji 1, Socio 10, Physics 10, EEE 10 and the list goes on and on and on, but all our efforts did NOT pay off.
  • I went to BA to see what subjects / majors i can take in advance, just so that i wont be underloaded. my best bet was BA 181 (to be taken 2nd sem of 2nd year) because its prerequisite is Stat 101, which i already took during the summer, but the schedule was in conflict with my english 11 so it wasn’t really an option for me. i asked the upperclass people what else i can take in advance, and they suggested BA 151 because according to them it was fairly easy and it didn’t have a prerequisite EXCEPT for the fact that you have to be at least a JUNIOR. so after 5:30pm, we decided to go home while the others lined up for Stat.
  • as soon as i reached home, i wrote the letter of request to waive the junior standing prerequisite of BA 151 because i was in dire need of a subject.

Attempt #2: failed. better luck next time. but at least i had hope. worse comes to worst, i can take BA 151.

June 5 (wednesday) – i went to UP at 6:30 am to line up for Marine Science (MS), but after 1 1/2 hours of waiting, the MS department announced that they only have 5 slots left for MS 1, so i, along with bam, brian, erika, eana, michelle and jowee decided to run to Villadolid Bldg (for Env Sci 1) to try our luck there. but voila! we were again unlucky. we went to NIGS to prerog for Geol 1 but only Erika got a slot, because the Geol classes were in conflict with our other classes. I went around UP the entire afternoon, hopping from building to building, to get ANY class. i was just so damn desperate coz i only had 12 units. but… i did NOT succeed. at around 3:30pm, i made up my mind that i’ll brave it out and take BA 151 this sem, so i went to BA and looked for the schedule of 151. soon after, i found out BA 151 had BA 101 as prerequisite, and i wasn’t allowed to take 101 yet, so in a nutshell, i CANNOT take BA 151.

i was so helpless.
i burst into tears.

Hoping some people canceled their slots, Catb went with me around UP to look for classes – SEA 30, Chem 1, Bio 1, Socio 10, etc. BUT, all the classes were already full. :(

Attempt #3: failed. it sucks to feel hopeless. but tomorrow will be a better day.

June 6 (thursday) - i was soooo desperate i devised an “ANTI-UNDERLOADING PLAN OF ACTION”. i decided to work around a blank schedule, meaning, i would cancel my other subjects and just leave my majors, BA 99.1 and Econ 100.1 because most of the classes that had slots were in conflict with my other subjects. with a relatively blank schedule, i realized it would be pretty much easier to prerog because i wouldn’t have to be too picky in terms of the schedule of the classes. because i was so so so desperate, i was already in UP at freaking 5 in the morning. i was 4th in line for Env Sci 1 and… and… and… after 3 hours of waiting… *drumroll please* i GOT IN!!!! i GOT IN!!!! :) :) wahoooo! i felt like i won the lottery!!! :) now all i need is one more subject and it’s BYE BYE UNDERLOADING DILEMMA for me! :) woooo! :) :) *sings*  There can be miracles, when you believe… though hope is frail… :) hahaha.
i went to the Departamento ng Filipino at Panitikan ng Pilipinas to prerog for Fil40, and after 6 hours and 10 minutes in line (9am to 3:10pm), i got it! i got it! i got it! wooo! woooo! :) i couldn’t believe it! :) FINALLYYYYYYYY, my hard work paid off. :) :) wahooo! wahooo! ahoooooooooooooo! :) oh yeah, babeh!!! :)
so ladies and gentlemen, with all pride and glory and with my head held high, i present to you my schedule for the upcoming semester. :)
